About Jonathan Volks
A little more about Jonathan Volks
I grew up and live in a small upstate city of Glens Falls, NY. From an early childhood I’ve been drawn to working with computers and the Internet. My first sites were on GeoCities and Tripod hosting which I’m glad the Wayback Machine does not have indexed.
The Early Years
In high school, I got my first formal training into websites during a website development class which taught FrontPage. I was hooked (but not with Frontpage). I continued my education at SUNY New Paltz where I got a bachelors degree in computer science. Although the education wasn’t related to the Internet, it was a great primer to learning the foundations of programming techniques that allowed me to pickup website programming languages such as ColdFusion, Legacy ASP and PHP with ease.
Post graduation, I worked for a helmet camera company called Niche Concepts (JonesCAM) where I helped run the website along with a wide variety of other tasks. Here is where I got introduced into eCommerce, search engine optimization and social media. After a few years, I went to work at Mannix Marketing where I gained most of my knowledge. From different programming languages, CMS systems, payment gateway APIs, web services and many more.
My career has brought me into the higher education field where I am currently the web programmer for Skidmore College. Not only do I program the website, but I’m also responsible for maintaining it and the overall health. It’s a daunting task for a large website but the challenge is exciting.
In my free time I enjoy hiking. It’s a deep passion of mine and helps me balance the technology and wilderness. Recently I finished all 29 fire towers of the Adirondack Fire Tower Challenge and will moving onto the Adirondack 46 High Peaks.
