Information about Jonathan Volks. I grew up and currently live in a small upstate city of Glens Falls, NY. From an early childhood, computers and the Internet were my main hobbies and focus of my life.

The Early Years

Senior year of high school, I got my first formal training into website development with a class taught in Microsoft FrontPage. I was hooked (but not with FrontPage). I continued my education at SUNY New Paltz where I got a bachelors degree in computer science. Although the education was more software development than Internet, it was a great primer to learning the foundations of programming techniques. This allowed me to pickup website programming languages such as ColdFusion, Legacy ASP and PHP with ease.

Post graduation, I worked for a helmet camera company called Niche Concepts (JonesCAM) where I helped run the website along with a wide variety of other tasks. Here is where I got introduced into eCommerce, search engine optimization and social media. After a few years, I went to work at Mannix Marketing where I gained most of my knowledge. From different programming languages, CMS web applications, payment gateway APIs, web services and many more.

My career has brought me into the higher education field where I am currently the web programmer for Skidmore College. Not only do I build web applications for the website, but I’m also responsible for maintaining it and the overall health. It’s a daunting task for a large website (10,000+ pages) but the challenge is exciting.

In my free time I enjoy hiking. It’s a deep passion of mine and helps me balance the technology and wilderness. Recently I finished all 30 fire towers of the Adirondack Fire Tower Challenge and will moving onto the Adirondack 46 High Peaks.
